What is clear PPF?
Clear paint protection film (PPF) is a transparent, optically clear polyurethane film that is applied directly over your vehicle's painted surfaces. Once installed correctly, it is virtually invisible and preserves the original colour, depth and gloss of your paint beneath it.
The film acts as a sacrificial layer. Road debris, stone chips, small scratches and environmental contamination hit the film first — not your paint. Because the film can be removed and replaced, your original paintwork remains unaffected beneath it.
How does self-healing work?
Premium clear PPF films contain a flexible elastomeric topcoat. When the film receives a minor scratch or swirl mark, the topcoat can flow back to its original shape when heat is applied. In most cases, light contact marks or fine scratches will disappear naturally in warm sunlight, or more quickly with warm water.
It is important to understand the limits of self-healing. It applies to superficial surface marks on the film itself — not deep cuts that go through to the adhesive layer, and not paint damage underneath. For deeper scratches, the affected section of film can be replaced professionally without touching the underlying paint.
Where is clear PPF typically installed?
The most impactful areas are those that face the highest risk of stone chip and debris impact:
- Full bonnet — the largest single high-impact area on most vehicles.
- Front bumper — collects significant stone chip damage at motorway speeds.
- Front wings — exposed to road debris thrown up by the front wheels.
- Door edges — vulnerable to car park dings and chips.
- Door cups — fingernail scratches accumulate quickly without protection.
- Mirrors — exposed on all sides and often struck by road debris.
- Headlights — detailed separately, see our headlight PPF guide.
Full-vehicle PPF covers every exterior painted panel, providing the most comprehensive protection available. Partial packages focus coverage on the zones most likely to be damaged.
Clear PPF vs wax and sealants
Wax and paint sealants sit on the surface of your paint and provide a degree of gloss and minor chemical resistance, but they offer no physical barrier against impacts. A stone chip will go straight through a wax layer to the paint. Clear PPF provides genuine physical protection that wax simply cannot replicate.
Can clear PPF be combined with ceramic coating?
Yes, and many customers choose to do this. Ceramic coating is applied over the PPF, making the film surface easier to clean, more resistant to contamination, and better at repelling bird droppings and road grime. The combination gives you physical protection from PPF and chemical resistance from the coating. We offer combined PPF and ceramic coating packages at CarDetail Lab.
How long does clear PPF last?
With professional installation and correct aftercare, premium clear PPF typically lasts between seven and ten years. Manufacturer warranties vary by film brand and tier. At CarDetail Lab we use films with manufacturer-backed warranties — ask us about the specific warranty for your installation when you enquire.
Aftercare for clear PPF
In the first week after installation, avoid high-pressure washing, automatic car washes and contact with the film edges. Once fully cured, wash with pH-neutral shampoo and a soft wash mitt. Avoid any abrasive compounds or hard waxes on the film. Annual inspections can catch any edge lifting early before it allows moisture under the film.
