What is colour PPF?
Colour paint protection film (colour PPF) combines the physical protection of standard clear PPF with a pigmented, coloured top layer. The result is a vehicle colour change that also protects every painted surface it covers — and can be removed without any damage to the original paint underneath.
This makes colour PPF fundamentally different from a re-spray. A re-spray involves sanding, priming and painting over the original finish — a permanent change that affects resale value and can complicate future insurance claims. Colour PPF is a reversible overlay. The car returns to its original colour when the film is removed.
Available finishes
Colour PPF is available in a wide range of finishes:
- Gloss — a deep, wet-look shine in the chosen colour.
- Satin — a smooth, low-sheen finish that sits between matte and gloss.
- Matte — a flat, light-diffusing finish for a stealth or tactical look.
Colour availability depends on the film manufacturer and the specific product range. We can discuss current colour options when you enquire. Custom colour matching may also be possible for some applications.
How colour PPF compares to vinyl wrap
Vinyl wrap is a well-established product for colour changes. Colour PPF is a newer category that combines protection with appearance. The key differences are:
- Protection: Colour PPF provides genuine stone chip and impact protection. Standard vinyl wrap does not offer the same level of protection against physical damage.
- Self-healing: Premium colour PPF has self-healing properties on its surface. Vinyl generally does not.
- Thickness: Colour PPF is typically thicker than vinyl, which contributes to its protective performance but also affects how it handles complex curves.
- Cost: Colour PPF is typically more expensive than vinyl wrap. The additional cost reflects the protective properties included in the film.
- Longevity: Quality colour PPF can last seven or more years. Vinyl wrap lifespan is typically three to five years for exterior applications.
For customers who want a colour change and also want to protect the original paint, colour PPF offers both in a single installation.
Is colour PPF suitable for full-vehicle coverage?
Yes. Colour PPF can be applied to every exterior painted panel on the vehicle. Full-vehicle coverage gives complete protection and a uniform colour finish across the car.
Some customers choose partial coverage — for example, applying colour PPF to the roof, bonnet and mirrors only, while leaving the rest of the vehicle in its original colour. This creates a two-tone effect while protecting the most impactful zones.
Colour accuracy and panel consistency
A critical requirement for colour PPF installations is consistent colour across all panels and consistent tension during application. Uneven stretching or inconsistent heating during installation can cause colour distortion or shading variations between panels. This is a specialist installation skill — the Colour PPF Specialist Course at the CarDetail Lab PPF Academy covers these techniques in detail.
Aftercare for colour PPF
Colour PPF requires the same care as clear PPF. Use pH-neutral shampoo, soft wash mitts and avoid automatic car washes with rotating brushes. Ceramic coating can be applied over colour PPF for enhanced gloss retention and easier cleaning. Matte-finish colour PPF should not be treated with gloss-enhancing products, as these will alter the finish.
